Hibiscus Quilt Block - Paper Piecing Pattern
This is a digital PDF pattern for Hibiscus Flower Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) quilt block only (not the entire quilt).
This quilt block involves Y-seams and small amount of appliques (only for the tiny yellow circles or pom-poms, depending on which one you choose to use, at the flower's stigma).
The download zipped file contains the following two PDF files:
- PDF File 1: "Hibiscus FPP Patterns" - This is the printable FPP pattern to make the Hibiscus FPP Quilt Block with 14" width (finished) (refer to the listing image to see how this 14" is measured). To make one complete block, you will need to print 5 sheets of this 1-page pattern.
- PDF File 2: "Hibiscus FPP Piecing Sequence and Tips" - This is the step-by-step guide on piecing sequence to make the complete block. This file also contains some tips on how to use the pentagon-shaped block.
This quilt block finishes in a pentagon shape with exactly a quarter inch seam allowance all around. You can add strips around the pentagon block ala log-cabin style such that you have enough fabrics around the pentagon to trim down to the regular square or rectangular shaped blocks (this is illustrated in one of the download files). The pattern guide also gives a couple of tips on how to use this oddly-shaped pentagon quilt block (more fun and easier than you might think!).
I designed this Hibiscus Quilt Block as I wanted a regular symmetrical shaped hibiscus quilt block that is not appliqued like Hawaiian quilt blocks. I think the regular symmetry of this block opens up interesting opportunities for blocks arrangements that produce interesting visuals like the one shown in the second last image of this listing.
- A good command of sewing, quilting and FPP techniques are needed to complete the block.
