Traditional Malay Houses - Paper Piecing Pattern
  • Traditional Malay Houses - Paper Piecing Pattern

    RM35.00Price

This is a digital PDF pattern. The download file contains printable FPP (foundation paper piecing) patterns for FOUR different house blocks and ONE girl-on-swing block (total FIVE blocks). The individual blocks' measurements are as shown in one of the listing photos.

The download file is a zip file containing two folders namely "A4" and "A3". If you have access to a printer that can print on A3 sized papers, print the files in the "A3" folder. If you only have access to printers that can print on A4 sized papers, then print the files in the "A4" folder.

    TIPS:

    • If you prefer the quilt smaller, you can adjust your print setting to scale them down by any percentage, but remember to maintain the same aspect ratio.

    • I designed these patterns with the fabric line "Hometown" by Tilda in mind. However, the quilt will look gorgeous in any fabrics as long as they have good contrast with each other to bring out the details of the houses. The black-and-white images of the quilt blocks provide a suggestion for your fabric selection in terms of darkness and lightness of the fabrics.

    • Make full use of the negative space around the house blocks to quilt motifs of palm trees, mushrooms, animals or clouds. Fun stuff!

    STORY BEHIND THE PATTERNS:

"Kampung"  is a word in the Malay language that literally means "village". In Malaysia, we use it to also affectionately refer to "hometown", even if said hometown is not in an actual village. We also always use this word to say "balik kampung", which means "going back to hometown", especially during festive seasons where people working in urban areas return in hordes to their hometowns to reunite and celebrate with families and old friends, such as during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri (also known as "Eid" in other parts of the world).

In the download file, you will notice the file names contain "Melaka", "Terengganu", "Minangkabau" and "Perak". "Melaka", Terengganu" and "Perak" are names of three states in Malaysia whose traditional Malay houses have distinct features depicted in the respective quilt blocks. "Minangkabau" is another distinct style of traditional Malay houses typically found in another state called Negeri Sembilan. There are many other styles of traditional Malay houses in all of Malaysia but these four are arguably the most famous. The Girl on Swing block is a nostalgic touch to anyone who grew up in a "kampung".

    • A good command of sewing, quilting and FPP techniques are needed to complete the block.

    • All patterns are full sized. Be sure to print at 100% scale.

    • You will need a PDF reader to open the files and a printer to print the templates. Zipped files will require file extractor programs like Winzip ro Winrar. Your computer might already have a built in file extractor program.
